Born on the Same Day

Johannes Brahms (1833) and Pyotr Llyich Tchaikovsky (1840) shared the same birthday, but these two titans of classical music could not have been more different.

Brahms, a German Romantic composer and pianist, was known for his perfectionism and produced symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, choral pieces, and more than 200 songs. He is viewed as one of the most prominent composers of symphonies and sonatas in the late 19th century.

Tchaikovsky was the most popular Russian composer of all time whose music had broad appeal for its emotional intensity, memorable melodies, and masterful orchestration, making his works enduring favorites in concert halls and ballet theaters worldwide. Think Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture. But he struggled personally because of the stigma against homosexuality in his time.

The two met once in 1888 but became neither rivals nor friends. Which of their music styles do you prefer? Let us start with Tchaikovsky then you decide.

Tune in next week for Brahms, but first here is a live performance of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto no.1 for 2 pianos.
