Music Monday | This One Is Ours | September 14, 2026

Today’s Music Monday comes with a little extra pride, because Dranoff commissioned it. In 1991, we asked the great American composer William Bolcom, a Pulitzer Prize winner and one of the most inventive musical minds of our time, to write a new work for two pianos. He gave us “Recuerdos.”

“Recuerdos,” or “memories,” is a suite of three Latin American dances that sends two pianists chasing each other through a graceful paseo, a sparkling Brazilian chôro, and a lilting Venezuelan waltz, a loving, virtuosic tour of the rhythms of a continent. It is exactly the kind of vibrant, border-crossing music we were built to champion.

Commissioning brand-new two-piano music has been part of Dranoff’s mission for nearly four decades, and the tradition continues November 7, when we open our 40th anniversary season with a world premiere by Adam Schoenberg.

“Recuerdos” is where that legacy lives, and more than thirty years on, it still sounds thrilling. Watch a dazzling performance from Seoul performed just last year.
