Music Monday | A Pianist of Two Worlds | October 26, 2026

With just 12 days until Nov. 7, meet one of the two pianists at the heart of our anniversary concert. Rebeca Omordia grew up in Craiova, Romania, the daughter of a Romanian mother and a Nigerian father, and she has spent her career bringing both of those worlds to her music.
Her training is pure Eastern European rigor. When she was five, her mother bought a piano so her daughters could play in church, and Rebeca was soon enrolled in music school. Her childhood idol was the legendary Sviatoslav Richter. She earned her degrees at the National University of Music in Bucharest before full scholarships brought her to Britain, where she now teaches at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
The BBC World Service calls her an “African classical music pioneer.” Omordia founded London’s first African Concert Series, now in residence at Wigmore Hall, and inspired Errollyn Wallen to compose a piano concerto for her that went on to win a BBC Music Magazine Award.
On Nov. 7, she joins pianist Glen Inanga, the Amernet String Quartet and bassist Paola García for Timeless Harmonies, our 40th anniversary season opener at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center. Here she is playing Nocturne No. 4 by Moroccan composer Nabil Benabdeljalil, from her African Pianism series:
Join us on Nov. 7 to celebrate 40 years of two pianos
