Some piano duos are built in the practice room. This one was built at the Palace of Versailles. When Lang Lang and Gina Alice Redlinger married in June 2019, guests at their reception got something most wedding audiences do not: a live debut performance by two of the world’s finest pianists sitting down at the same keyboard for the very first time.
Lang Lang needs little introduction.
The Chinese-born pianist who filled in for an ailing soloist at 17 and became an overnight sensation has since performed for presidents, played at the Olympics, and sold millions of recordings worldwide. His wife is no less formidable. Born in Wiesbaden, Germany to Korean German parents, Gina Alice began playing at four, gave her first solo recital at fifteen, and went on to record for Deutsche Grammophon. They even share the same legendary teacher: Gary Graffman of the Curtis Institute of Music.
Together at Steinway Hall in London, they tore through Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 with the kind of crackling energy that only happens when two musicians know each other completely. The video went viral with over three million views. Watch and you will understand why.
